Inside each Keck dome is a multi-ton rotating structure that supports the telescope. The entire blue-colored structure seen here can be rotated full circle.

Inside each Keck dome is a multi-ton rotating structure that supports the telescope. The entire blue-colored structure seen here can be rotated full circle.

The following are descriptions of locations in the panoramic image.

Location 1 - Keck I mirror (side view)
This mirror and its twin, housed in the Keck 2 dome, are the largest mirrors ever constructed. Each mirror is 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter and is composed of 36 hexagonal segments that work together as a single piece of reflective glass.

Location 2 - Adaptive optics facility
This enclosure houses a system that processes starlight in order to remove distortions caused by movements in the Earth's atmosphere.

Location 3 - Crane

Location 4 - Base support structure
Inside each Keck dome is a multi-ton pivoting structure that supports the telescope. The entire blue-colored structure seen here can be rotated full circle.

Location 5 - Elevator
Provides access between the basement level and balconies of the observatory dome.
